I’ve got an old HiFi amplifier lying around. Can I use that to drive the loop and save myself some money? previous ... next

Definitely not! A loop is no more than a wire going round the hall, and normal HiFi and PA amplifiers will see this as a short. Smarter (newer) amps will go into protection mode, older cheaper models are more likely to overheat, and potentially catch fire!

Some older multi-turn loops could use higher voltage PA amplifier, which is perhaps where some of this confusion stems from.
